Routing a crack prior to sealing with hot rubber involves grinding the pavement in the immediate vicinity of the crack to clean the crack and improve adhesion of the filling material. When sealant is applied into a routed reservoir, adhesion is improved and the sealant is better equipped to accommodate crack movement due to weather and traffic. Crack routing also allows the sealant level to remain below the surface of the pavement which protects the sealant from traffic and snowplow contact. The void is then filled with hot rubber.
